Biography - Attorney Philip R. Goutman was admitted to practice law before all the courts in the State of Michigan and the Federal District Court in 1984. He received a Juris Doctor degree from Michigan State University Law School, formerly Detroit College of Law. Before that, Mr. Goutman graduated with high distinction from the University of Michigan at Dearborn where he earned an A.B., majoring in Political Science. He was fortunate to have personally studied with several leading luminaries in political theory, philosophy, and jurisprudence including J. Patrick Dobel, Albury Castel, and Denis Dutton. Professor Dutton gained further renown when he left the University of Michigan to accept the position of professor of philosophy at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. There, he co-founded and co-edited the influential website Arts & Letters Daily. The website propelled Professor Dutton to one of “the most influential medial personalities in the world.” Mr. Goutman first became interested in the law after seeing a portrayal of Clarence Darrow in the movie Inherit the Wind. He then studied Mr. Darrow’s career as an advocate for social and economic fairness. Mr. Darrow followed in the tradition of other famous lawyers who became defenders of justice including Abraham Lincoln, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Louis Brandeis, and Thurgood Marshall. While in law school, Mr. Goutman was privileged to watch the famous attorney, Melvin Belli, as he tried a product liability case in Wayne County Circuit Court. Meeting Mr. Belli, during a recess in the proceedings, proved to be an inspiring and great learning experience.
